HUTCHINSON ISLAND — Throughout the course of his Air Force career, Gil Richards received ample recognition and an array of medals, including the Bronze Star during the Vietnam War for savvy command of a supply depot during the Tet Offensive.

Today, the long-retired colonel and his wife, Judy 'J.J.' Johnston, will receive a reward that Richards ranks among his highest honors.

'Right up there, absolutely,' said Richards, 68. 'This is quite an honor. I guess I think there are an awful lot of people who deserve it as much as we do, so it's kind of humbling.'

During a private luncheon at noon today at the Sailfish Point Country Club, the Treasure Coast chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals will bestow upon the couple the National Philanthropy Day Unsung Hero Award for their volunteer work with the American Red Cross Martin County Chapter."
