In 1630, John Winthrop's 'A Model of Christian Charity' preached to Puritans bound for New England and became incorporated into the fabric of our emerging American society. In its emphasis on the obligation of rich caring for poor, and the obligation of the poor to continually strive toward financial success, it was — and remains — a uniquely American sentiment"
