"Armendariz, 58, of Huntington Beach is well-known in Orange County for his volunteer work driving 'Jesus ministry trucks' to motels, where he dispenses food, clothing and Christian ministry.

He won a 2003 National Philanthropy Day award with congressional recognition for volunteer work, to which he has dedicated himself full time.

During this time, Armendariz, a U.S. permanent resident, was also fighting deportation to his native Mexico. He thought he had escaped removal until he received a letter this month asking him to appear at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Los Angeles office for deportation Wednesday."

Star-Telegram | 10/19/2005 | Open hearts and open hands: "Former Mayor Bob Bolen has been touting Fort Worth as the most generous city in America for years. If you have any doubts, get in your car and look at the names on the buildings as you drive around our city: Carter, Richardson, Burnett, Moncrief, Tandy, Brown/Lupton, Bass, Scott, Justin, Muse, Alexander, Walsh, etc.

Space won't allow me to list them all, but you get the picture. Fort Worth has a great philanthropic heritage, and the last few weeks are living proof that we take that heritage very seriously.

Thursday is National Philanthropy Day in Fort Worth. The Association of Fundraising Professionals' Fort Worth Metro Chapter is celebrating 25 years of philanthropy by honoring the Amon G. Carter Foundation and the Sid W. Richardson Foundation for their years of giving in our community.

This local chapter is made up of 175 professional fund-raisers dedicated to ethical and effective fund raising for nonprofit organizations in Fort Worth and throughout North Texas."

The church's Mission and Outreach Committee wins Philanthropic Organization honor.

By SHANNON DONNELLY , Daily News Society Editor

The Mission and Outreach Committee of The Episcopal Church of Bethesda-By-The-Sea is the recipient of the Association of Fund-Raising Professionals' (AFP) Outstanding Philanthropic Organization award.

Ann Hokanson, who serves as co-chairwoman of the Mission and Outreach Committee with Pat Reichenbacher, described the honor as a surprise.

'Sure, we were surprised,' she said Tuesday. 'We're pleased as punch. It's nice to be recognized for our work.'

Each year, Mission and Outreach provides an average of $400,00 in grants to nonprofit agencies, schools and church-related organizations, which in turn assist thousands of Palm Beach County residents.

In addition to financial support, the committee urges that its beneficiaries — particularly grassroots organizations — understand the need for accountability and its role in providing long-term solutions in the community.

The recognition comes as part of the AFP celebration of National Philanthropy Day, which this year honors Palm Beach County's outstanding philanthropists. The 2005 luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 22 at the Ritz-Carlton in Manalapan.

Sheila Johnson, a philanthropist, co-founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET) and founder/CEO of Salamander Hospitality, is the keynote speaker for the luncheon."
