The Mission and Outreach Committee of The Episcopal Church of Bethesda-By-The-Sea is the recipient of the Association of Fund-Raising Professionals' (AFP) Outstanding Philanthropic Organization award.

Ann Hokanson, who serves as co-chairwoman of the Mission and Outreach Committee with Pat Reichenbacher, described the honor as a surprise.

'Sure, we were surprised,' she said Tuesday. 'We're pleased as punch. It's nice to be recognized for our work.'

Each year, Mission and Outreach provides an average of $400,00 in grants to nonprofit agencies, schools and church-related organizations, which in turn assist thousands of Palm Beach County residents.

In addition to financial support, the committee urges that its beneficiaries — particularly grassroots organizations — understand the need for accountability and its role in providing long-term solutions in the community.

The recognition comes as part of the AFP celebration of National Philanthropy Day, which this year honors Palm Beach County's outstanding philanthropists. The 2005 luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 22 at the Ritz-Carlton in Manalapan.

Sheila Johnson, a philanthropist, co-founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET) and founder/CEO of Salamander Hospitality, is the keynote speaker for the luncheon."
