Today (Nov. 15) is National Philanthropy Day.

Never heard of it?

You're hardly alone.

The continentwide day may be less popular than Groundhog Day.

But in an era of rising costs and dwindling government funding, the importance of money-givers and volunteers has never been greater.

'There is more competition right now for charitable appeals in this country than Canadians are giving,' says Ted Garrard, who as the University of Western Ontario's vice-president external guides the university's mammoth fundraising efforts.

'There are more than $7 billion in appeals going on right now across this country and the demand is outstripping the supply.' "
