People with big hearts were honored Tuesday morning at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort in Estero.

A panel of judges selected 11 Philanthropists of the Year in Lee and Collier counties for donating money and time to causes such as better health care, affordable housing, improving education and protecting the environment.

Honorees were chosen in five categories established by the National Association of Fund-raising Professionals. State Sen. Burt Saunders proclaimed Nov. 15, 2005, as National Philanthropy Day in Southwest Florida. "
