Though they were supposed to take time off Friday to be honored as model fundraisers, Randi Shubin Dresner and Wendy Chaite couldn't stop working for long.

'We need turkeys,' Dresner, executive director of Island Harvest, told 700 members at the annual Philanthropy Day of the Long Island Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. She said the food-rescue organization has received 2,500 turkey contributions but needs 21,000 to supply 500 food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters for Thanksgiving. 'Giving is down while the need is up 40 percent,' she added."
