The Daily News Record: City Desk News: "Friends ‘In Awe’ Over Couple’s Volunteer Spirit Posted 2005-11-21
By Brad Jenkins

It all started so simply.

Seven years ago, when Greg and Elizabeth Evans threw a Christmas party, they wanted to do something different, more meaningful.

They were caught up in the 'Christmas frenzy' at the time, buying stuff they didn’t need, and they were ready for a change.

Inside the 100 invitations they sent that first year, they asked friends to bring gifts for two less-fortunate families.

This year, the Evanses sent nearly 500 invitations for a party that will collect gifts for 26 residents identified through Salvation Army.

Over the years, the couple’s party has helped about 140 people.

'Something amazing has happened,' the couple wrote in this year’s invitation, which they entitled 'A Christmas Confession.' 'God has taken control of our party. What started as a somewhat selfish excuse to have a party, God turned into a Christmas tradition: an evening of incredible generosity, fellowship and love.'

The Mount Crawford couple’s generosity, which extends beyond their party to numerous charities in our community, caught the attention of the Shenandoah Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals this year, which honors them today as volunteers of the year."
