National Philanthropy Day
I’ve had the opportunity to celebrate National Philanthropy Day (NPD) with many of you this year.

I’ve never left any NPD celebration without feeling inspired by the stories I’ve heard, the people I’ve met and the feeling of fellowship and community as the philanthropic sector comes together. We reenergize ourselves and our organizations, and remind the public why philanthropy is so critical to our society.

Celebrating true spirit of National Philanthropy Day | philanthropy, day, gates - Jacksonville Illinois News and Information Jacksonville Journal Courier: Today marks the 25th anniversary of National Philanthropy Day. While most of us may never reach the status of Carnegie or Gates, we all have the opportunity to be philanthropists.

The word philanthropy is derived from the Greek word “philos” which means “loving” and “anthropos” meaning “man.” Simply put, to be a philanthropist is to love mankind. Philanthropy manifests in the form of financial giving, voluntary action and associations that are built among individuals. Last year, it is estimated that a half trillion dollars were donated by Americans through financial giving and volunteer support to the over 1.5 million nonprofit organizations that are registered with the Internal Revenue Service.
