Today (Nov. 15) is National Philanthropy Day.

Never heard of it?

You're hardly alone.

The continentwide day may be less popular than Groundhog Day.

But in an era of rising costs and dwindling government funding, the importance of money-givers and volunteers has never been greater.

'There is more competition right now for charitable appeals in this country than Canadians are giving,' says Ted Garrard, who as the University of Western Ontario's vice-president external guides the university's mammoth fundraising efforts.

'There are more than $7 billion in appeals going on right now across this country and the demand is outstripping the supply.' "

Back in 1990, the first cohort of graduate students in Saint Mary’s College’s philanthropy and development Masters program received a group assignment: come up with a definition of “philanthropy.” They produced T-shirts with this imprint: “Philanthropy is the voluntary giving and receiving of time and resources, frequently within an organizational context, directed toward charitable purposes and/or betterment of quality of life.”

On Nov. 16, Dave and Muriel Arnold were recognized by the regional chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals at the area’s “Outstanding Philanthropists of 2005” for their many years of voluntary generosity to area charitable organizations. They were the seventh Winona recipients of that recognition in the program’s 20-year history."

It all started so simply.

Seven years ago, when Greg and Elizabeth Evans threw a Christmas party, they wanted to do something different, more meaningful.

They were caught up in the 'Christmas frenzy' at the time, buying stuff they didn’t need, and they were ready for a change.

Inside the 100 invitations they sent that first year, they asked friends to bring gifts for two less-fortunate families.

This year, the Evanses sent nearly 500 invitations for a party that will collect gifts for 26 residents identified through Salvation Army.

Over the years, the couple’s party has helped about 140 people.

'Something amazing has happened,' the couple wrote in this year’s invitation, which they entitled 'A Christmas Confession.' 'God has taken control of our party. What started as a somewhat selfish excuse to have a party, God turned into a Christmas tradition: an evening of incredible generosity, fellowship and love.'

The Mount Crawford couple’s generosity, which extends beyond their party to numerous charities in our community, caught the attention of the Shenandoah Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals this year, which honors them today as volunteers of the year."

The Reporter - Letters: "Many chances to 'act locally' on Philanthropy Day
Reporter Editor:

Many of us often think about giving nationally or even internationally especially in times of disasters and crises. It's a natural human response to want to help, resulting in an outpouring of concern, compassion and cash.

Yet many of us remember the popular expression, 'Think globally, act locally.' It urges us to look closer to home for solutions to broad problems and to give within our community. At the Solano Community Foundation, our community foundation, we pay particular attention to that idea and do act locally every day.

In keeping with this mission and furthering the idea of very local giving, the Solano Community Foundation has just established The Seven Cities Fund, a cluster of seven different funds, one for each of the seven cities of Solano County. They are called, clever folks that we are: Fund for Benicia, Fund for Dixon, Fund for Fairfield, Fund for Rio Vista, Fund for Vacaville, and Fund for Vallejo."

Wausau - Share time, talents, treasure and celebrate philanthropy: "Share time, talents, treasure and celebrate philanthropy

Every culture depends on philanthropy and nonprofit organizations to provide essential elements to the civic health of our communities, promoting goodwill and human well-being. In recognition of this rich tradition of philanthropy and the importance of charitable giving in our communities, November is 'Celebrating Philanthropy Month.'
Philanthropy Month was established by the Association of Fundraising Professionals in 1986. The month is designed to honor those who exemplify the spirit of philanthropy, a word with Greek roots meaning 'love of mankind.' Often the term philanthropy is used in conjunction with giving time, sharing talents or giving of one's treasure. These three forms of philanthropy add value to our communities and make us better people in the process.
Philanthropic groups existed in the ancient civilizations of the Middle East, Greece and Rome. An endowment supported Plato's Academy (387 B.C.) for about 900 years. Medieval merchants of Europe founded organizations for worthy causes and in the 19th century, personal fortunes led to the creation of private foundations, such as the Rockefeller Foundation and the Carnegie Corp. These foundations bequeathed gifts in support of the arts, education, medical research, public policy, social services, environmental causes and other special interests - similar to the foundations of today."

National Philanthropy Day is a day designated to celebrate giving. This is a time we can all celebrate, even if there's not a Rockefeller anywhere in the family tree.

National Philanthropy Day is an especially good time for communities like Perry County to celebrate the growth of rural philanthropy. A report by New Ventures in Philanthropy, an initiative of the Forum of Regional Associations of Grantmakers, reveals that rural philanthropy is a growing trend across the U.S.

What is rural philanthropy? It's rural residents, faced with urgent problems caused by declining populations and dwindling government resources, using grassroots philanthropy to revitalize their communities."

Who would give $187.9 billion a year to individuals they don't know? Who would contribute more than 16 billion hours of time if they weren't required to? Would it surprise you to know that it's the American people?

We are the most generous society in the world with some 80 percent of households donating each year to charitable organizations involved in health care, education, housing, the arts, the environment, social services and many other issues. Consider all the natural disasters our world has faced over the past year. Americans gave more than $1.4 billion to aid tsunami victims in Southeast Asia and $1.8 billion to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. And we continue to give -- around the world and close to home.

On Nov. 17, we will honor local philanthropic leaders in celebration of National Philanthropy Day.

Philanthropy is 'a desire to help mankind especially as shown by gifts to charitable or humanitarian institutions,' according to Webster's New World Dictionary. That says it all about so many generous people in the area who have made a difference in people's lives by giving of their time, talent, and money. Their reward is the good feeling of helping others."

Whether our Thanksgiving traditions include food, prayer, football or just enjoying one another's company, most of us think of this holiday as the beginning of the giving season. However, for many in the community, giving is important throughout the year, with a special focus on philanthropy during November -- through the celebration of National Philanthropy Day and the observation of Community Foundation Week.

The Brandywine Chapter of the Association for Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and the Delaware Community Foundation (DCF) have adopted the Ribbon of Philanthropy as the official symbol of philanthropy for Delaware and will introduce it at Delaware's 2005 Philanthropy Day, which is sponsored by AFP.

By doing so, we are supporting The Power of Philanthropy, a worldwide initiative launched by the Puerto Rico Community Foundation, and further committing our efforts to promote philanthropy and the value of doing what's right for the common good.

Philanthropy Day will be held Tuesday, Nov. 15 "

Winston Churchill understood the importance of service to the community. Individuals in the Commonwealth of Virginia serve the community in which they live through participating in community activities, volunteering for local organizations or financially supporting a nonprofit entity.

These contributions may sometimes go unnoticed by the larger public. However, these individuals and their donation of time and money are the lifeblood of nonprofit organizations throughout the area."

They serve on boards and committees; they offer ideas and opinions; they open their checkbooks and their homes to fundraising events.

“They” are philanthropists, and their day to be recognized happens this year on Nov. 17.

The Central Texas Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals will present awards that day to couples, individuals and businesses at its annual event at Ridgewood Country Club.

The group hosts National Philanthropy Day to recognize the people who give money and time to nonprofit organizations, said Beth Vivio, a member of the selection committee. “We are fortunate that there are so many generous people in Central Texas,” she said. “We want to publicly recognize and applaud their good works. We also want to educate the community about the importance of philanthropy. It is an essential part of what makes Central Texas such a great place to live.”"
